Legionella Awareness Online Training

One of our partners we have formed a relationship with over the years is All About Asbestos and they have provided us with an efficient, effective asbestos service. They bring with them over 30 years of experience working with businesses and the general public within the asbestos industry. Together with our skilled and experienced team, we offer services for industrial and commercial properties as well as domestic buildings.

Asbestos has been deemed as one of the, if not the number one, most dangerous building materials ever used in the country. Thousands of people get very ill or die each and every year because of their exposure to asbestos. The reason for such widespread impact on the general public and those who worked in construction is because it was widely used in the construction industry until around the year 2000. The Control of Asbestos Regulations in regards to Asbestos Awareness Training for Architects and Designers applies to employers, employees, self-employed persons and duty holders and cover all work with asbestos containing materials. Regulation 10 of CAR states that every employer must ensure that adequate information, instruction and training is given to employees who are liable to be exposed to asbestos. This includes maintenance workers and others who may come into contact with or disturb asbestos. It was not until long after asbestos had been used and installed in many homes and businesses that the full health and safety risk was known.

Our aim is to provide our customers with a specialist tailored survey and provide advice on managing any asbestos found within their premises. To this end we offer a specialized Asbestos Awareness Training course.

This course goes over a basic asbestos awareness and safety training course and is designed for people who may come into contact with asbestos during the course of their work. Most people who  go through the training course includes builders, plumbers, electricians, carpenters and others who work in the construction or restoration field.
The course consists of the four following modules:
Module 1 – Properties and Risks of Asbestos Exposure
Module 2 – Different Types of Asbestos
Module 3 –Avoiding the Risks from Asbestos
Module 4 – An Outline of Asbestos Legislation

Protect yourself, your team, your clients, and your community by knowing how to be safe around asbestos. Contact us for a FREE Consultation! If you have any questions about our Asbestos Awareness Training for Architects and Designers training course or you want to arrange a consultation contact us, we would be happy to talk with you about your needs and how we can help!

Asbestos awareness training

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous silicate mineral, or put simply, asbestos is a fluffy rock! Every week 20 tradesmen die from asbestos-related disease. If you carry out work on a building that was built or refurbished before the year 2000, you could have been exposed to asbestos, without even knowing it.

The three common types of asbestos are crocidolite, amosite and chrysotile; although other forms can be found in premises – fibrous actinolite, fibrous anthophyllite and fibrous tremolite.
Crocidolite, amosite and chrysotile are also known as blue, brown and white asbestos, although the colour is not always significant in identification.

Occasionally in publications there is a reference to the mineral groups to which asbestos belongs. Chrysotile belongs to the serpentine group (like fine threads of cotton) while the five other types listed above belong to the amphibole group (like fine needles).

Asbestos Awareness for Architects and Designers

Health Risks
Every week 20 tradesmen die from asbestos-related disease. If you carry out work on a building that was built or refurbished before the year 2000, you could have been exposed to asbestos, without even knowing it.
 Asbestos-related diseases kill more people than any other single work related illness.
 Asbestos-related diseases can take 15-60 years to develop and there is no cure.
 Asbestos-related diseases are currently responsible for more than 4500 deaths a year in the UK and the number is still rising.
 ACMs in good condition and left undisturbed cannot cause ill-health.
 The greater the disturbance of ACMs and the longer the duration, the greater the risk to health.

History of Asbestos
The properties of asbestos have been known from ancient times. This is not just that asbestos was fire proof, but that is was dangerous. In Roman times it was known not to buy slaves from asbestos mines, because although they might look healthy when bought, they did not live long.

Modern commercial history began in 1870 when a large deposit was found in Canada.
Properties of asbestos that make it so useful are:
 good thermal insulation
 stable at high temperatures

 good electrical insulation

 high tensile strength

 long flexible fibres; and

 does not degrade over time.

As such, asbestos was widely used in buildings for insulation and fire protection, e.g. roofing, cladding, thermal insulation, etc.

Asbestos was very rarely used in its raw form in buildings but was typically mixed with other products to make Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs). So, cement sheets with added asbestos became asbestos cement sheets; insulating board with asbestos added became Asbestos Insulating Board (AIB), and so on.
Much asbestos is still left in buildings, in the form of ACMs and it is estimated about half a million non-domestic premises still contain asbestos. When ACMs are not treated correctly, asbestos can be deadly!
